Lupita Nyong’o is certainly shining. The Oscar nominated actress and red carpet stunner has grabbed attention far and wide since her breakout role in 12 Years a Slave. But, at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, she admitted that she used to struggle with her physical appearance. So much so, she routinely prayed for her skin to become lighter overnight. We have all come to know and love Union over the years. She has played the endearing love interest in hit box office films while also capturing roles of grit and action. We learned on a recent airing of Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Next Chapter that, behind the scenes, Union has struggled with some of the core tenets of worth like altruism, reciprocity, and magnanimity. Serena Williams is a gorgeous lady. Not only that, she is a world renown athlete. And, the July 2013 edition of Essence magazine, the “Body Issue”, will highlight the radiant young woman of color on a grand scale. The athletic beauty also guest edited the edition of the magazine geared toward black women. And, within its covers, she addressed the topic of her curvy figure and the criticism she previously received.
A great example for curvy women of color, her gorgeous cover shows a proud woman who accepts herself as is.

Janelle Monae is “Shining.” A relatively new artist, she is most known for her first single “Tightrope” released in 2010. But, she took the airwaves by storm and impressed her varied audiences with her unique style and signature pompadour. The beautiful Ms. Monae will be gracing the cover of the May 2013 issue of Essence Magazine. And, her Cover Girl campaigns have encouraged many young women of color to be true to themselves.
